Madhubani district is one of the districts of Bihar, and Madhubani town is the administrative headquarters of this district. Madhubani district is a part of Darbhanga Division. The district occupies an area of 3501 kmē and has a population of 3,570,651 (2001 census). This is the centre of Mithila, a region where the main language is Maithili.
The "Madhubani" style of paintings derives its name from this region as the style originated here, in the early 17th century. These paintings are made using vegetable dyes, and the canvas is usually cloth or paper. These days, several of the well-known "Mahubani" paintings are used as motifs on bags, kurtas.
HISTORY
Mithila was a large and powerful kingdom in what are now northeastern India and southern Nepal. Today, Mithila refers to the area and the people who live there. Madhubani, which in literal translation means Forest of Honey, has been the cultural center of Mithila region and today is an important district in the northern part of Bihar, India.
There are temples of Goddess Kali and God Kapil at Madhubani. Enthusiastic tourists may like to attend the assembly of charming girls for choosing husbands, held during a fortnight in June at Sourat, 8 km from Madhubani.
